Giving Educational Christmas Gifts
Saturday, December 4th, 2010It’s that time of year again. Time to frantically think of what to buy your children, nieces and nephews, or grandchildren for Christmas. It’s especially difficult buying gifts for children you don’t see that often. How do you know you aren’t duplicating someone else’s gift, or if the child will even like what you give them? Why not try giving educational Christmas gifts to the children on your list?
Educational toys make wonderful gifts. Anything from puzzles, games, or activity sets to foreign language CDs and classic children’s books can be a great alternative gift to the usual high end, expensive toys. Counting toys and alphabet toys are great for younger children. Other toys like doll houses and farmyard play sets encourage play with other children and parents.
School supplies are another great choice. Once Christmas is over, children will be heading back to the classroom, and what better way to send them off than with new, fun school supplies? Choose fun or unusual items like character erasers, patterned pencil cases, pretty notebooks, and fancy pens. You could even find some fun childrens lunch boxes and put some healthy treats inside like dried fruit, trail mix, or wholegrain crackers.
As you think about what to buy this Christmas, try to choose things children will learn from, grow into, and appreciate more as time goes by, rather than fad toys that will be soon forgotten and expensive electronics that will be out of date all too soon.
If you need more ideas, enlist the help of the child’s parent, guardian, or other friend or relative.
Learning doesn’t have to be boring
Friday, November 26th, 2010There are many purposes of children’s toys. One of the most important, certainly from the point of view of parents, is to keep them entertained. After all, dealing with bored youngsters can be a nightmare, even for the most experienced childcare providers. This is a particular issue during weekends and school holidays, when youngsters have more time on their hands than usual.
However, passing the hours is not the only reason why kids’ toys are useful. They also help little ones develop, both mentally and physically. For example, sporting toys allow boys and girls to hone their coordination. Meanwhile, children’s toys and other recreational activities can also help youngsters learn.
This is important as a means of aiding the formal education they receive in school, and, because they are fun, kids are less likely to be resistant to them. Among the children’s toys that can help in this way are books. They can be cheap to buy, are easy to transport and they enable boys and girls to advance their reading skills. Also, getting them into the habit of reading at this early stage could set a precedent for their entire lives.
And acquiring knowledge and skills in this way does not have to be boring, as there are plenty of fun and engaging kids books out there to be read. As well enhancing their reading ages, such offerings can also improve concentration levels and may encourage youngsters to use their imaginations more. Using kids puzzles can also boost problem-solving and lateral thinking.
All of these factors make books excellent choices for kids’ toys.
Kids’ toys can teach cooperation
Monday, November 22nd, 2010There are many life skills that youngsters have to pick up before they reach adulthood if they are to maximise their chances of being happy and successful. As well as the obvious ones such as reading, writing and physical coordination, there are other things to consider. Kids books can help enhance confidence in these areas.
One fantastic way of encouraging boys and girls to improve their methods of cooperation is via kids’ toys. Activities that can involve more than one individual are perfect in this regard, such as jigsaw puzzles. When more than one individual sets about such challenges, they need to confer with their helpers to devise a plan.
Another way in which children’s toys can bring youngsters on is by teaching them how to share. We’ve all seen the scenes in family homes, parks and school yards of youngsters arguing over who will get to have a go with certain kids’ toys. It is vital that little ones learn how to wait their turn without causing a big fuss and they also need to be able to share.
Boys and girls who live with siblings may develop this awareness at an earlier stage than those who do not have brothers or sisters and, for this reason, the experiences of only children in school and other social situations are particularly important for them.
By getting them children’s toys and encouraging them to share with others when they are in public, you can help ensure they progress in this way.
Music to your ears
Thursday, November 4th, 2010There are a plethora of children’s toys available these days, from the simple and cheap to the technological and expensive. However, there are certain types of kids’ toys that have been popular throughout the ages and, while they may have changed in many ways over the decades, in principle they remain the same.
For example, youngsters have always enjoyed items that make sounds, particularly musical ones. In the past, simple music boxes were handed over to grateful boys and girls. Now, there is a whole selection of children’s toys based on the theme of music. For example, if you are looking to purchase kids’ toys as a gift, you can get your hands on great kids craft ideas including plastic musical balls, model boats that play tunes and many other such items.
Meanwhile, if the infant you are buying for would enjoy creating music for themselves, you may want to get them a baby drum set. This could help them develop their sense of coordination and rhythm and it is not too loud, so it won’t drive you crazy in the process. Pre-school toys offer plenty of great opportunities to cultivate learning.
There are also maracas that you can buy, along with other such products. Tots love to be creative and they enjoy the sound of music, so these types of offering are ideal. They can lead to countless hours of entertainment and, who knows, one day the youngster may progress to playing symphonies on the piano.
And you do not have to break the bank in order to get musical toys. By going online you can find a range of deals that are bound to suit your budget.
Environmentally Friendly Kids Party Game Ideas
Sunday, August 8th, 2010Kids’ birthday parties can make even the most sullen of folk throw on fairy wings and skip about for some increasingly competitive games of Musical Chairs. With this detachment from reality so prevalent at a kids party, we sometimes forget how wasteful and damaging the day can be as a whole to the environment. Teaching kids through play is a well-used educational tool, perhaps by using educational toys. So don’t be put off by the fear that your party could become a bit preachy with the inclusion of an environmental message.
Scavenger Hunt
This is a seriously versatile game-base from which to build. Prepare some cards (on recycled paper of course) and write an adjective or description on each card, e.g. soft, pink, bigger than a cat, blue and green, something with holes in, rough, shiny etc. The children can work in pairs of groups. They take the coloured cards away and try to find natural objects from the garden that match the card. The winning group/pair get a little prize.
True or False
Place large “True” or “False” signs at opposite ends of your kids party area. Have all the kids sit in the middle. Read out a fact and ask them “Is that true or false?” The kids must run to the end of the room they agree with. The kids who are wrong sit out, whereupon you ask your next question to the remaining kids. This is a fantastic game to teach kids about a few environmental issues without boring them.
Play And Education
Friday, April 2nd, 2010As a parent it can be daunting trying to ensure that your kids’ educational needs are fully satisfied, whilst still giving them the freedom to enjoy their transient childhoods. Luckily however, education and play do not only complement each other but children actually learn through play. Therefore, with the right childrens toys you are not only ensuring your kids are happy, but that their educational needs are well catered for.
For evidence of the importance of play in a child’s development we need only look at the animal kingdom. Whilst it is often tempting to avoid the fact, we are mammalian creatures and have pretty much the same basic needs and development patterns as apes, in whom it is clear that play is much more important than a frivolous evolutionary side effect. Instead play is the context in which the young begin to interpret the world.
With this in mind, we shouldn’t be aiming to separate play from education, but should be injecting as much fun as is humanly possible into the learning process for kids. Luckily we have the advantage over apes in that we can use childrens toys, and nowadays educational childrens toys are available to suit any stage in a child’s development.
For young kids, a good play set will help galvanise certain budding skills such as communication, problem solving and role play, whilst giving your child a few moments of escapism. For older kids, on the other hand, electronic kids toys will help them acclimatise to modern life.
