The Best Birthday Party

Thursday, December 15th, 2011

Planning birthday parties can be a stressful thing. If you get it wrong, there is a chance you will have a lot of bored or miserable kids under your supervision. And as we all know, having one of those is hard enough work. So, to make sure your party goes off without a hitch you need to make sure you provide plenty for the kids to do.

Whatever your budget, there are ways to find activities for kids ranging from the no budget approach of simply coming up with party games and fun things to do, to the more excessive plans of bouncy castles, face painting and clowns. Either way, with the right forethought, you can be sure you have a birthday party that the kids will always remember, whatever your budget is.

One great way to start things in the right direction is to think of a theme. Whether it is based on your child’s favourite TV show or whether you simply want to opt for something fun such as a pirate party or a Teddy Bear’s Picnic, giving the decorations, cake, costumes and party games you’ll play a general theme will be sure to hook the children’s imagination right from the very start. Even the invitations can be themed around your chosen idea meaning that the kid’s excitement can begin long before the party even starts.

For those on a tighter budget, everything from decorations to invitations to cake can be made right there at home, and a bit of imagination is all you need to come up with fun games and party activities based around the chosen theme.

Whatever the budget, always remember children’s party bags at the end for the guests – not only will the children be expecting it, but their parents will be as well, so have a look online for some cheap party toys and cheap sweets for the children.

Party toys shouldn’t be saved for just the party bags either – having a smattering of cheap kids toys around the place will help you to ensure that even if some of the kids start to get bored of the games, there will still be plenty for them to do. Finding cheap kids toys online is easy these days, meaning even those on the strictest of budgets can make sure every avenue is catered for, right through to those who want to splash out lots on the special occasion.

For those who can’t think of themes, there are plenty of online sites ready to help you whether you’re having an outdoors summer party or an inside winter wonderland of fun. Whatever theme you finally decide on, it will be the planning that makes or breaks a party, so don’t just expect the theme alone to carry you through. Kids are notoriously volatile, so ensuring that you have every possible angle covered will make the difference between your child and you having a great day, and you both having a nightmare you will want to forget as soon as possible.

The Best Way to Buy Children’s Toys

Friday, December 9th, 2011

Wooden ToysOne of the great benefits of buying toys for children who are still young, is that many of the same types of games stay in fashion for many years meaning that hand-me-downs don’t carry the same stigma they can for kids who have started to get that little bit older. The other great benefit is that, at an early age, children will rarely care whether a game is brand new and top of the line or something that was consigned to a bargain bucket years before.

Therefore, when you want to buy your child new toys, you can find yourself saving plenty of money by looking into buying them from online clearance sites. Sites such as netpricedirect.co.uk offer quality, branded toys at massive reductions, just by selling them direct to you at clearance prices. With all the top names, you can ensure that you will still be getting great quality and a toy that your child will love, whilst saving lots of money in the process.

The alternative option to these sites would be going the auction site route or charity shop route, but with these you can never be sure if they have been looked after, will work properly, or indeed will be quite what they say they are. With clearance sites, you know you will be getting a brand new item shipped to you directly, ensuring that whatever kids toys you buy they will still be the very best quality.

With fashions changing so quickly and new products being released all the time, it will take very little time at all for the right childrens toys to be released at clearance prices. These types of clearance sites are also perfect when you need to buy a number of presents. For instance, when you are to be entertaining children at a party you may well want a number of childrens toys on hand to lessen your burden, or simply want to include something cheap but exciting for the kids in their party bags when the party finally comes to an end.

For some, looks and names are everything and having the very latest releases will be all about competition. However, kids of a young age will almost never care about such trivialities and will enjoy any present they get, and since you can now find them at such low prices, giving them new little treats doesn’t have to be reserved for those special occasions they may have used to have been saved for.

Not only that, but with many of these sites you will be able to find plenty of educational toys in the same place, meaning that you can ensure your child is learning new things all the time.

These sites will also buy in bulk meaning that they can discount prices even more, and with them being online companies, their overheads will also be much lower, so don’t be put off by the fact that prices seem lower than they should ever be able to be. Simply enjoy the bargains and stock up on whatever kids toys your child will enjoy the most.

Benefits of Children’s Toys

Thursday, December 30th, 2010

They may well mess up the house and become a serious trip hazard to anyone over two feet tall, but children’s toys bring so many benefits above and beyond simply giving your little one something to do with their day that the clean up and the end of the it all will be more than worth it.

We all know children’s brains are like sponges. As opposed to the kind of sponge that lets lots of stuff come dripping out, like many of us start to feel like as we get older, these sponges are ones that soak up anything everything from the world around them. Imagine you learning a whole new language in such a short time!

So, whilst they may come into this world a blank, if very beautiful, canvas, everything around them starts to fill in those blanks extremely quickly. One of the benefits of children’s toys is that, whilst also simply giving them something fun to do in those days before they have to conform to structure like the rest of us, they also help them learn some extremely valuable things along the way.

The most obvious things adults will notice that children have learnt is the ability to babble utter nonsense, then learn to crawl, then finally to walk and talk, but all the way along that long and infinitely rewarding route, they are learning new things every day from social skills to problem solving right through to basic numeracy and literacy.

Most toys these days are educational toys in one way or another and have been designed to offer fun and learning in equal and mutually conducive measures.

Whilst children are using their aural and optical senses on a daily basis, offering them toys that help advance them quicker and in a more focused way will help speed up everything from reactions to their ability to grasp simple language. Other toys will help with balance and coordination right through to understanding simple premises such as size and shape.

Educational toys will also help to stimulate the child’s imagination. Sitting them in front of a computer or TV all day will do very little for them in being able to form ideas for themselves, and so instead the right toys will help increase their ability to create mentally, not just physically.

However, expecting the toys to do it all on their own might be expecting a little too much. It is a wise idea for parents to play with their child as much as possible to help increase their awareness of social interaction and adequately prepare them for when they head out to playgroup or school.

In all, the most obvious and great benefit of toys is that they will help children learn without them even realising it. As we get older, the opportunities for this to happen to us get fewer and fewer as learning slowly gets intermingled with hard work and excessive effort. So let them enjoy all the learning they can whilst it’s still so much fun.

Toys for Toddlers

Thursday, December 23rd, 2010

When your child is just a toddler, there are so many different types of toys you can buy for them. Some will even be happy sitting in front of a games console all day, racing cars and playing shoot ‘em ups. So what are the best sorts of toys for your child?

Whilst it may be impressive to see a three year old slaying baddies and performing moves on games you had no idea could even be done, they are somewhat counter-productive for children and can in some cases even be harmful. At such an age when children are very impressionable, allowing them to play such games can have a lasting psychological effect, whilst also making them less inclined to play more simple games, using children’s toys to help develop their imagination and intelligence.

Some computer games that encourage learning and problem solving can be good in small doses, but on the whole most of the games designed for use on video consoles will be having a negative effect on young children. Even as they start primary school, such games can still have negative effects, causing bad grades and behavioural issues in a surprising number of children.

It also can be damaging for children socially. The toys they play with should help them develop social aspects and with more and more time spent in front of a screen, whether that is with computers or simply watching cartoons, not only will social skills suffer, but it can also have an effect on health in general from that of lack of exercise to eye strain for the developing eyes.

When looking at buying childrens toys, it is much more effective for toddlers to have educational toys. Many of the simplest toys are actually the best, helping develop everything from numeracy and literacy to those social skills and simple problem solving.

Toddlers are usually full of energy and dampening that with too much TV or computer games can have a very negative effect. Educational toys can help harness this energy in a productive way and constructively help all areas of development for the child. Instead of computer games, push toys and play sets will be much more beneficial as will things such as building blocks and even just simple cuddly toys.

The great thing about many of the physical toys on the market today is that they almost all offer some type of educational advancement for the children, whilst also ensuring that they get up and about and don’t join the growing obesity statistics.

The other benefits are that they can actually be surprisingly cheap. Online clearance sites will often sell toys at up to 80% discounts on the original prices, meaning that by just shopping around you can find them plenty of toys to help develop their brain without breaking the bank.

At this age, children’s brains are like sponges. So when you are thinking about toys for them, it is important to ensure their brains will be absorbing the right things.

Paris Hilton Gives Away Children’s Toys

Friday, November 26th, 2010

Socialite Paris Hilton has revealed she is not all about parties and posing. The 29-year-old, who is the heiress to the famous hotel chain and is also now a TV personality, model, singer, actress and fashion designer, gave away children’s toys to a charity based in her home country, the US.

Along with her boyfriend Cy Waits, the glamorous blonde spent the day shopping for the kids’ toys, along with items for decoration and edible treats that she then handed over to The Rescue Mission Shelter.

The move may have been at least in part an attempt to rebrand herself after her recent involvement with the police.

Hilton avoided jail after pleading guilty to drug possession and a misdemeanour involving the obstruction of an officer after a banned substance fell out of her handbag.

After her good work handing out the children’s toys and other items, she returned home and got online.

The celebrity used micro-blogging website Twitter to highlight her efforts, stating: “Just got home. Had a great day today. Cy and I went to the pumpkin patch to buy a bunch of pumpkins. Also some tools to carve and paint them and lots of candy and toys. Brought everything down to the children at The Rescue Mission Shelter.”

According to the star, the recipients of the kids’ toys were pleased.

She remarked: “They were all so excited and grateful. It’s such an amazing feeling to make a child smile and be happy.”

Hilton is no newcomer to the world of media hype. The great granddaughter of Conrad Hilton, who founded Hilton Hotels, starred in TV series The Simple Life alongside long-term friend Nicole Richie, daughter of singer Lionel. The pair had known each other since childhood.

Broadcast between December 2003 and August 2005, the programme showed the two wealthy young socialites as they attempted to do low-paid jobs, such as farm work and cleaning rooms.

The twosome also got stuck into tasks such as working as counsellors at a camp and serving meals in a fast-food restaurant.

As well as her TV exploits, Hilton has appeared in minor roles in a number of films, including the House of Wax, which was completed five years ago.

The following year, she released a music album named Paris.

Hilton is not the only celebrity to have been involved in charitable work. Many famous faces use their profile to raise awareness of particular causes and to help them out.

Indeed, in the UK each year Comic Relief involves a large number of TV, music and sports personalities, who devote their time and effort into generating money for particular projects.

As well as helping out the individuals who use the services of the charities, this can also boost the profile of the famous individuals who take part, as they are seen as being more caring and deserving of success.

Children’s Toys Given to Victim of Bullying

Friday, November 19th, 2010

A young girl who suffers from Huntington’s disease and who was bullied as a result has been given the opportunity to go on a shopping spree for children’s toys.

Kathleen Edward, who is seven years old, was driven to a store that specialises in selling kids’ toys.

Not only did she get to significantly boost the contents of her playroom, but the youngster also spent the day in style. Unlike most of her fellow shoppers in Ann Arbor, she was driven to the location in a white limousine.

Also, before getting into the vehicle, she walked along a red carpet while well wishers tossed red rose petals at her and the crowd cheered.

In addition, she even had an escort provided by local police officers.

Commenting on Kathleen’s experience, her grandmother Rebecca Rose said: “She always smiles, but I’ve never seen her smile like this.”

Her two-hour retail extravaganza was funded by the donations of people across the world, which totalled thousands of dollars.

While picking out her children’s toys, the youngster was accompanied by her father, stepmother, grandmother, two aunts, four cousins and another girl who also has Huntington’s disease.

The first item she picked up was a frog, because she knew her dad likes them. Commenting on his daughter, Robert Edward said: “She’s the most caring person in the world. She’s always thinking of others.”

Meanwhile, other goodies that were collected included dollhouses and the dolls to go in them. In addition, items were picked up for her two younger sisters, who did not make the trip.

However, the story behind why she was given the chance to get so many kid’s toys is not such a happy one.

She was taunted by neighbours because of her medical condition. Huntington’s disease is an inherited disease of the brain and, as yet, there is no cure for it. It damages the nerve cells in the brain, causing a gradual loss of function in areas of the brain. As a result, movement, cognition and behaviour are affected.

Both men and women can inherit the condition and there are around 6,000 sufferers in the UK at present.

Kathleen’s mother died as a result of the disease last year and her grandfather also lost his life because of it.

Responding to her case, Hans Masing, who is the owner of Tree Town Toys, said he could sympathise because he was bullied too when he was young.

He stated: “I empathise with Kathleen and her family about what they are going through.”

The money that was left over from the excursion was used to buy toys for children at the C S Mott Children’s Hospital at the University of Michigan, as well as kids in hospices and other youngsters in the area who have Huntington’s disease.

Kathleen’s father remarked: “Let’s benefit some other kids, too. She’s not the only one suffering.”

Hospitals and other such institutions that provide care for children often collect toys for them to use while they are in the centres because they help to keep them entertained.

Children’s Toys Form Basis of Museum Exhibition

Thursday, November 11th, 2010

Children’s toys have long entertained youngsters around the globe. In every society, the items are to be found wherever children are. As well as helping boys and girls pass the time, such objects can also encourage them to learn about the world around them and to develop greater spatial awareness and co-ordination.

In addition, kids’ toys are a great way for infants to get used to sharing possessions and to waiting their turn.

However, it is not only children who are fascinated by such toys. Adults too find them interesting. This is why they form the basis of many museum exhibitions around the globe.

One example of this is the Long Island Children’s Museum, which has put on a new display that explores the inside world of toys, the New Hyde Park Illustrated News reports.

Also, the items on display provide visitors with an incentive to explore science. For example, people are invited to explore how an Etch A Sketch works and what is inside a Jack-in-the-Box.

Recommending the exhibition to parents, the publication stated: “If you’ve been wondering how to stop your toddler’s push toy from making such an infernal racket, you’ll love Toys: The Inside Story. It lets visitors look inside common toys while exploring the basics of pulleys, cams, gears, linkages and circuits. The exhibit consists of 12 components that allow for hands-on exploration and experimentation.”

The display also enables people to examine the inner workings of classic children’s toys such as Operation and Hungry Hippo. In addition, newer offerings are not left out, with Hokey Pokey Elmo featuring alongside some of the more seasoned products.

Meanwhile, in the What’s Inside? section, visitors are able to look in detail at popular toys such as Mr Machine, while the Gears at Play area illustrates the effects of gear ratios as people figure out how to make the ballerina and carousel spin faster or slower.

Those lucky enough to be able to make it to the museum before the display comes to an end on January 7th will not have to pay extra to see the exhibition. Fees are included in the cost of entering the building and babies under the age of one get in free.

Meanwhile, people keen to visit an exhibition of kids’ toys while enjoying a stay in Scotland may wish to visit the Edinburgh Museum of Childhood. Established in 1955, the facility has been a popular attraction in the city ever since.

It is designed to appeal to all ages and encourages adults to look back on their own childhoods and remember the games they used to play and the toys they used to have.

The toys in the building range in date from the 1950s until the present and different events and exhibitions are held in order to ensure a constant flow of visitors.

According to those responsible for the attraction, which is based in the centre of the city, it is not only the chance to have a good time but it is also educational in a fun way.

Children’s Toys Used to Help Youngsters Get Fit

Friday, November 5th, 2010

There are many possible benefits caused by children’s toys. Firstly and perhaps most importantly, they let youngsters pass the time without getting bored. In this way, they can provide an invaluable lifeline for parents who are constantly trying to find things for their sons and daughters to do.

However, this is not their only use. They are also a great way for little ones to develop their minds and imaginations. Another and equally important function of some kids’ toys is that they help children stay fit.

With this in mind, a local authority in the UK is using some iconic children’s toys from the 1980s to help local boys and girls remain in shape, the Loughborough News reports.

According to the publication, space hoppers and pogo sticks are among the items being utilised to help local youths burn some calories and pass the time.

The initiative has been named Charnwood Borough Council’s Retro Play programme and it is being organised by the organisation’s play ranger team as part of a series of activities intended for youngsters aged between five and 16.

Commenting on the scheme, play ranger Sue Monk said: “We love the idea of using space hoppers and pogo sticks because not only are they great fun but they also encourage children to get active.

“The play rangers had great fun test driving them and I hope that parents will encourage their children to have a taste of how they used to play!”

Other activities being run by the council include raft-building, climbing and kite sports.

In addition, more traditional activities such as football, badminton and trampolining are on offer.

Also remarking on the initiative, councillor Peter Lewis, Charnwood Borough Council’s cabinet member for leisure and culture, said: “Space hoppers and pogo sticks are certainly iconic toys which immediately cast your mind back to the 80s. They were great then and I’m confident they’ll be just as popular second time around!”

“I would encourage as many people as possible to take advantage of this huge range of events which will be running throughout the borough during the half-term break. There really is no need for anyone to get bored!”

Charnwood Borough Council is not the only local authority to encourage youngsters to get involved in activities that promote exercise. The issue of overweight and obese boys and girls is rising in the UK as a result of lifestyle changes.

Kids often get less exertion because they do not walk as much as their counterparts from previous generations. Also, some modern games are blamed for encouraging them to stay indoors too much, rather than running around in the open air.

However, many parents are afraid to allow their sons and daughters to play outdoors unsupervised because of concerns over their safety.

But by choosing toys and other things carefully and monitoring their use, mothers and fathers should be able to achieve a satisfactory level of physical exercise. The benefits if they do can be significant in terms of the current and future wellbeing of their children.

Relax and Watch Them Learn

Friday, October 29th, 2010

Keeping young children occupied can seem like a full time job. Before school comes along to fill their days with structure and yours with a little peace and quiet, finding things to keep them interested without resorting to cartoon after cartoon can be a struggle. However, there are plenty of children’s toys out there which are not only self-reliant, but also educational at the same time. So not only can you put your feet up and let the little ones get on with it, but also feel content in the knowledge that they are learning at the same time.

Finding the right educational toys can be a tricky job, but there are plenty of online stores able to point you in the right direction. Toys are an extremely important part of child’s development and, depending on the toy, can help develop anything from auditory skills and imagination to conceptual thought and solving problems.

Keeping a wide range of toys and adding to them as regularly as possible will help to give you a much easier time when raising your child, and help develop them as much as possible before you send them out on their own to school. Certain children’s toys will even help boost confidence such as balancing blocks and balancing trucks. The happiness you see within your child when they are really enjoying playing with something is often as much from the feeling of accomplishment as it is from simple mindless fun.

Of course, none of this is to say that you can simply buy them more toys than they can possibly play with and spend the day ignoring them. The social side of interactive play is also a very important part of a child’s early development. Be sure to also pick children’s toys that you can play with them and guide them through the learning they simply can’t do on their own. Phonetic alphabet books and simple counting games are great to help their early brains adapt to future learning.

Of course, it shouldn’t be all about learning. The important part of any kid’s toy is that they are fun, so don’t think that you have to force education down their throats. Creative tendencies should also be awakened. Using classic toys such as plasticine is a great way of helping them develop their imagination. Also be sure not to overwhelm them too quickly and don’t aim for toys that are too advanced for them or you will run the risk of frustrating them and doing much more harm than good.

Ultimately, almost any toys will be educational to children at an early age. There are very few playthings that will teach your child nothing, and remembering this is very important. Specific educational toys should be used, but only so far as they are fun for your child. Play to what interests them, not what you think should. And remember, they will learn as much from simple toys than some much more complicated ones, and they may just have more fun in the process.

Your Child’s Christmas List

Thursday, October 21st, 2010

Kids are fickle. We all know that. As soon as you think you know what they want, they have changed their minds, off onto a new fad, their imagination forever captured by something new and better. So buying the perfect gifts for them can be a nightmare – they tell you what they want and by the time it comes for them to strip their presents naked, they may well have already moved on. So the best way to buy kid’s toys is to know what they want before they do.

Anticipating the next must-have child or toddler trend is not an easy task and, this year, the toy shop marketing campaigns will be stronger than ever as the recession fades away behind us and they convince us it is okay to reach for our wallet again.

One likely result of this is that this year’s toys will be more hi-tech than the past few years and your favourite little monster won’t be content with any old thing. With hi-tech contraptions becoming an ever more common part of our children’s lives, with many owning anything from mobile phones to digital cameras, electronics are likely to be a key theme at the top of any child’s list.

That is not to say that this Christmas has to be more expensive than any other – cheaper, novelty toys are as likely to be treasured as the more expensive flashier numbers. For instance, thanks to certain recent advertising campaigns, the ubiquitous meerkats are likely to be a big hit this year with kids of all ages, and your local or online toy shop will be filled with numerous incarnations to please just about every child.

For the higher-end presents, the biggest electronic hits are always the ones that have plenty to ensure they don’t get boring too quickly. This year it is the turn of kid’s video cameras. A number of the newer models offer everything from editing facilities and fantastic zoom to inbuilt games.

Remote controlled cars are also likely to make a major come back, with new flamboyant attempts on the classic favourite including more compact looks and the ability to perform flips, spins and all manner of tricks. As kid’s toys go, this is a dead cert to keep your children occupied for a long time to come, even if it may result in a few minor injuries to your feet and the paintwork.

For the girls, keep an eye on film and TV as the majority of presents for daughters will revolve around the latest releases. So if you can spot the next craze coming, you’ll be one step ahead of them.

The best way to ensure that they get exactly what they want this Christmas is to time it just right. Too early and the fashions will change, too late and there will be nothing left to buy. And don’t always listen to them; think ahead and you might find you get them something they never even knew they wanted.
