Manufacturer Moves With The Times With New Educational Toys

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

A producer of children’s toys is moving with the times by introducing a new device aimed at youngsters. LeapFrog has long been a producer of toys and games and now it has unveiled the Leapster Explorer.

The offering will be able to perform a number of hi-tech functions, including running video, 3-D graphics and Flash-based games.

On July 12th, the product will be launched with 12 games available for children to get stuck into, as well as 18 Leaplet Learning Apps.

Commenting on the move, chief executive of LeapFrog Bill Chiasson said: “The new digital apps era is underway and we want to apply that technology to our line of educational products. This is the first product in a platform that will have broader uses,” VentureBeat reports.

It added: “In the making for 18 months, the Explorer is the biggest product launch for the company since it launched the Leapster 2 handheld in 2008.”

According to the news source, the educational toys – which are aimed at children aged between four and nine – are an effort by the company to “keep up with the times”. It noted that Apple has the iPod Touch, which is “extremely popular” with youngsters because there are many applications and games that can be used on it.

An international firm with operations in countries including Canada, the US and the UK, Leapfrog describes itself as a designer, developer and marketer of technology-based educational products.

The company professes to focus on producing offerings that are effective learning experiences for all ages in school or at home. Its portfolio includes education books and handheld games.

VentureBeat claimed that LeapFrog is “one of the few” device makers that has a “long track record in creating educational games that are fun for kids and pleasing to parents”. It knows how to keep children engaged in educational content, the source suggested.

Let the teenagers plan their own party

Monday, July 26th, 2010

It is a rare child who doesn’t look forward to the childrens party which will mark their birthday. They will be the centre of attention among all their friends, so you want to make sure everything will be perfect on the day. Planning a party is something that anyone can do but planning an unforgettable party often requires some advice. If your child has entered teenage, the chances are they won’t want your help to plan the party.  In fact, if you were even to suggest that you help in any way, they will probably let you know in in no uncertain terms that they can do it alone.

So let the teenagers get on with it, but be on hand to offer advice if they need it, and definitely be there on the day the party takes place. We all know what happens when teenagers are left alone. If you are planning a childrens party for the younger age group, here are some ideas that may help you.
Select a theme based on their favourite character, either from cartoons or film and base the kids party on that character.
The venue for your kids party can be in your house or outdoors if the birthday is in the summer. When there are more than ten kids of age five and above, it is probably best to have an outdoor party if the weather allows it. Failing that, think about hiring a room where you can hold a childrens party, as this will mean your furniture escapes a trashing.

Ideas for memorable kids parties

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

Because we all lead such busy lives these days, there always seems to be so much to do when trying to arrange a kid’s party. This means that we end up chasing ourselves as there never seems enough time to get everything done, but clear planning and organisation can help you throw a brilliant childrens party, one that your guests will remember for a long time to come.
Leave yourself plenty of time to organise the children’s party, so around three weeks before, send out written invitations containing the following information.
Your child’s name and which birthday they are celebrating.
Your address and phone number, and perhaps your email address.
The date, start and finish times of the party.
If you’re having a themed party, your invitation should make it clear if the guest needs to dress up, and don’t forget to let them know what the theme is going to be.
You may need to draw a map if you’re inviting children whose parents haven’t been to your home before. This also applies if you’re holding the party at a venue that may not be familiar to all guests.
It’s also a good idea to ask mums on the invitations to let you know if their child has any allergies or dietary requirements.
Once you’ve sent out the invitations to your children’s party, you can start planning the food and entertainment. Make sure that this is all sorted out at least a week before the kids party, and you should be fine.

Closure Of Toy Shops Will Be A Sad Day

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

The closure of a toy shop in Whitton will be “sad day”, it has been suggested. Writing in the Richmond and Twickenham Times, Joanna Kilvington said the high street Papillon is located on will not be the same when it is no longer trading.

Owner of the retail outlet Robert Charrington is shutting down after 25 years in south-west London and he revealed it was a hard decision to make.

Describing the toy shop, Ms Kilvington said it is a “much-loved independent store”. She added that its closure will not be welcomed by local “children, parents and the 20-somethings of today who, like me, will see it as an end to our childhood”.

Papillion is due to cease trading in the next few weeks. It was originally opened in 1985 by Mr Charrington and it was his second venture selling children’s toys. His first outlet was opened when he reached the tender age of 21 and he has been in the business ever since.

Commenting on his reasons for leaving the market, the game enthusiast remarked: “My head and my heart are disagreeing, but I’m having to listen to my head. I have customers who came when they were ten and are now 35 and bringing in their own children.”

According to the expert, there are a number of toys that have remained popular throughout the decades. For example, Lego, Sylvanian Families and Thomas the Tank-Engine tend to go down well with youngsters.

Mr Charrington’s personal favourites, however, are Matchbox cars and such is his love for the miniature vehicles that he has developed another business which focussing on creating die-cast motors.

Despite being resolute in his decision to shut his toy shop, he did reveal that he will feel a sense of loss after leaving. He stated: “It is a sad time when you close the doors. I will be very sad to leave the high street.”

Toddler parties

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

Organising a birthday party for your toddler doesn’t have to be a problem. A childrens party should be a fun time for everyone involved, so you don’t want to be rushing around doing the washing up or preparing complicated party food. So plan out a couple of things which will make the day run smoothly by keeping things simple. The same goes for any childrens party, but lets focus on your toddler for the moment.
Unlike the first birthday, toddlers know what’s happening when it comes to their birthday party, and believe it or not, your baby’s first birthday will probably be the easiest of the many kids parties to come. So, here are some fun ideas for throwing a stress-free birthday party for older toddlers. Don’t forget this about celebrating your child’s special day, so keep it simple and fun by making sure that there will be plenty to do at the childrens party.
Once they have had something to eat – and once again, this should be kept simple, sandwiches, jelly and ice cream, cakes and biscuits. As mentioned, you don’t want to be stuck in the kitchen for most of the day, do you?
The golden rule for successful kids parties having plenty of fun games and activities to keep them occupied. Keep in mind that toddlers do not always fully understand the rules, and may not want to  wait their turn in the game. They also have short attention spans and constantly want to move around, even during kids party games like musical chairs.

Kids parties on a shoestring

Sunday, July 18th, 2010

We all know that times are hard thanks to the economic downturn, and as a result we’ve all made changes to the way we spend money. This has affected most areas of our lives to one degree or another, but there are some things which you can do without breaking the bank. When it comes to organising a childrens party you can still give your guests a great day which they will remember, and it won’t cost you a fortune. There is a wide range of cheap party supplies available if you know where to look, and these will help you plan a kids birthday party – or any kind of childrens parties – without spending too much money. You can also help to keep the price of the party down by making your own cakes, jellies and sandwiches, so all you have to buy then is ice cream and soft drinks. Entertainment? Organise a disco and play musical chairs. The kids will love it.
After the kids party is over and your guests are leaving, you will want to give them a memento of the day, and cheap childrens toys are one way you can do this. Once again, you will be able to find cheap childrens toys on the internet or on the high street, and your guests will be delighted with them. Another idea is to make your own party bags using sparkly material, and fill them with party bag fillers such as sweets, a little toy and a piece of the birthday cake.

The disastrous Childrens Party

Friday, July 16th, 2010

When my daughter was five years old, I dropped her off at a children’s party, arranging with the hosts to collect her three hours later. When I returned, I was surprised to see my daughter and most of the other kids in tears. The lady who was holding the children’s party for her daughter saw the expression on my face and took me to one side. She explained that, far from being the memorable day she was hoping for, just about everything that could go wrong at a kids party had happened.

First of all, the entertainer who had been booked turned up late, which had lead to the children becoming restless as the food wasn’t going to be served until after the entertainer had done his twenty minute slot. This lead to a fight between three of the boys who had been invited to the childrens party, which upset the girls, so that was the first round of tears. When the entertainer did turn up, he was so awful that the lady who had organised the party asked him to leave. Apparently, the mask he was wearing frightened the children, which lead to another outbreak of tears.

She went on to tell me that, just when she thought it couldn’t get any worse, her mother – who she had asked to bring the birthday cake into the room where the party was taking place – had tripped on one of the kids toys on the floor, and the cake crashed to the ground.
I felt sorry for her, but my daughter and the other kids soon recovered from the events, and she still laughs about it today, ten years later.
